Tufted Capuchin
Cebus olivaceus
Tufted Capuchin, Replica. Robust Male.
The tufted capuchin is a robust, stocky monkey that varies in color from light brown to mustard yellow. Notably, they have coarse black fur on the crown of their heads with extra "tufts" of black fur above their ears, hence the name. Additionally, they have thick black sideburns extending from their crowns, another identifying characteristic of tufted capuchins.
Primatologists have noted skeletal features in the skull that may distinguish tufted capuchins from other capuchins. Tufted capuchins also known as robust capuchins have large zygomatic arches for the masseter muscle, thick body of the mandible and shorter mandible than other capuchins. Tufted male capuchins also have a sagittal crest and complex sagittal sutures in comparison to other capuchins. These skeletal differences in cranium and mandible are interpreted as feeding adaptations to the tufted capuchin’s varied diet – large fruits, vegetation, eggs, insects, vertebrates and invertebrates.
