Sabertooth Cat
Homotherium cf. crenatidens
Sabertooth Cat Homotherium cf. crenatidens Right Saber
A beautiful Right Saber, showing excellent serration detail, from the Sabertooth Cat Homotherium cf. crenatidens, CB-06. The saber-tooths fall into two broad divisions: those with long and narrow canines, called dirk-tooths, and those with shorter, wider, more coarsely serrated canines, called scimitar-tooths. The genus Homotherium comprised scimitar tooth cats. The scimitar-tooth cats had longer limbs and were faster than the shorter-limbed dirk-tooth cats. Smilodon is a representative of the dirk-tooths. We are grateful to the Babiarz Institute of Paleontological Studies for the opportunity to cast this individual.
