As the smallest of the North American falcons (under 6 ounces), the American kestrel is both predator (of small songbirds) and prey (of red-tailed hawks, American crows and barn owls). Its primary diet, however, is insects, rats, and mice. American kestrels don't build nests but look for tree holes or natural crevices. Clutch size is 4-5 eggs.

The colors and patterns used were determined by the egg used as well as reference material to find a happy medium that would be representative of the species.
