Borax and boric acid protect skins, raw skeletons and wood from pest and mould infestation.

The two products borax and boric acid are of crystalline structure and cannot outgas. Objects treated with borax and boric acid do not have a washfast finish. Borax is basic, boric acid acidic. Therefore, the products are only suitable to a limited extent for the long-term preservation of skins.
Protection of skins and raw skeletons
During mounting, the skins are coated on the leather side with a saturated borax solution (approx. 80 g / litre water).
For transport (e.g. on collection trips or for shipping), the skins and raw skeletons can also be immersed in the saturated solution for approx. one hour and then allowed to dry, or finely powdered borax can be sprinkled directly onto the skin side, into the feathers/hairs and raw skeletons.
Boric acid has an antifouling effect when used abundantly. It is used in powder form for pre-preservation of bird skins, skins of smaller rodents, snakes and lizards.
Wood preservation:
The effect of borax and boric acid is based on the fact that the food of the pests (protein in the wood) is made inedible by the borax. The starch structure, i.e. the supporting structure of the wood, remains unchanged. The woods are brushed, sprayed or dipped. Any white crystallisation that forms after drying can easily be removed with a soft brush.
Normal woods:
Dissolve 80 g borax in 1 litre hot water.
Acidic woods (e.g. oak):
Dissolve 80 g boric acid in 1 litre of hot water.
"Neutral mixture" for all kinds of woods:
Dissolve 60 g borax and 60 g boric acid in 1 litre hot water.
