Porcupine Claw
Porcupine claw. Found throughout North America, the common porcupine is entirely vegetarian. During the spring and summer months, its diet consists of buds, leaves, flowers, berries and nuts. In contrast, its winter diet is mainly evergreen needles and the inner bark of trees. Although the common porcupine may remain in its den for long periods of time during cold weather, it does not hibernate. When approached by enemies, this animal quickly turns its back , raises its 3 inch quills in a threatening gesture and lashes out with its tail. The front feet of the common porcupine has 4 toes while the rear feet have 5 toes. Each toe has a strong, curved claw.
