Seal Forelimb

Phoca vitulina
Seal Forelimb
Our seal forelimb is in three pieces; the hand itself is assembled. The forelimb (pectoral flipper) of the harbor seal has five digits of comparable length. The digits are webbed and have claws (1-2 inches long) that can be used for grooming and fighting purposes. The digits of the hind limbs, while also webbed and clawed, are not of similar length, the first and fifth digits being significantly larger than the middle digits. Both the forelimbs and hindlimbs are covered with hair. Adult harbor seals are generally solitary. It's estimated that there are between 300-500 thousand harbor seals in the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans.
