Wombat Skull

Vombatus ursinus
Wombat Skull
The wombat is a marsupial native to the forested and mountainous regions of south-east Australia and Tasmania. With short legs and muscular bodies, they grow to approximately 40in in length with sandy-colored, brown, grey or black fur. Wombats are the largest burrowing animal, using their powerful fore-limbs to dig extensive burrow systems. While most marsupials have pouches facing the front of their body, wombats have a backward-facing pouch to protect the Joeys from flying dirt while the mother is digging. An excellent example of convergent evolution, the wombat is often compared to the North American groundhog, both having specialized dentition for feasting on vegetation, as well as powerful forelimbs and thick front claws for burrowing. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
