Drying consolidating and sealing agent for bones, fossils, archaeological finds, base of taxidermy mounts, etc. Former name formerly Degalan 4792L.
Soaking the objects in OSTEO-FIX solution massively increases their stability down to the depth of the substance and their surface hardness. The surface is sealed and is thus less sensitive to soiling. OSTEO-FIX can be dissolved again at any time in
ethanol or acetone. OSTEO-FIX is a high quality acrylic resin based on ethyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate and as such is highly lightfast and resistant to ageing.
The concentrate is dissolved in butanone and methyl ethyl ketone. Thus, the solution in ethanol also contains small amounts of the two solvents. The previously supplied Osteo-Fix granulate (Degalan N80) with exactly the same ingredients is no longer produced. We can still supply remaining stocks on request.
Application:The objects to be cured must be thoroughly dry. Objects where there is a risk of shrinkage cracks forming during drying are dehydrated in an alcohol series and then transferred directly into the OSTEO-FIX solution.
Smaller objects are placed directly into the OSTEO-FIX solution. Larger objects that are too large for an immersion bath are brushed with a brush until the object no longer absorbs any solution.
Any shiny spots can be removed with ethanol or acetone and a brush. For larger objects, vacuum impregnation is advantageous.
Concentration:Normally an 8 - 10% solution is optimal. Higher concentrations are normally not used because of the high viscosity. However, there are applications where concentrations up to 25% and higher are used. For very fine objects (e.g. small mammal bones) a 5% solution is used. Multiple applications are necessary to increase the stability of very fragile objects.
