This Homo neanderthalensis was found in 1848 at Forbes' Quarry in Gibraltar. The discovery of the remarkably complete female cranium actually occurred eight years before the famous finds in the Neander Valley that would serve as the type specimen for the taxon. The significance of the Gibraltar fossil went unrealized for years. George Busk, who had translated the description of the Neander Valley discoveries into English, recognized its similarity to the Felderhof finds, including the projecting midface and expanded maxillary sinuses. While he and colleague Hugh Falconer presented it at a meeting in 1865, it did not receive due attention until the early 1900s. Since the exact location and details of the discovery are unknown, no specific date has been determined for this cranium. In general, Neanderthals are thought to have lived between 200,000 and 28,000 years ago, and occupation sites in Gibraltar suggest that they might represent one of the last surviving populations. The Bone Clones® Hominid line is composed of discoveries from anatomically modern humans, archaic humans, early Homo, early hominins, and other hominids. The majority of the casts in this line have been recreated by our team of anatomical sculptors. Some are reconstructions made by anthropology professionals using fragmentary elements from original discoveries and extrapolating the missing parts from those (i.e. Neanderthal skeleton). A small portion of the hominin line has been cast from original material. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
