Zoology: Bones

Manatee

Trichechus manatus
Florida Manatee Skull.
Manatees are more closely related to elephants, hyraxes and aardvarks than to seemingly similar cetaceans (whales and dolphins). While this aquatic mammal is largely herbivorous, it may some-times feed on fish or invertebrates. With a torpedo-like shape, they average 10 feet long and weigh around 1,000 lbs. They have two agile front paddle-like forelimbs, a broad fin-like tail, and powerful upper lips, which they use to forage through sediment and maneuver food. Large, docile animals, manatees live in warm coastal waters and estuaries and are endangered due to changes in climate, commercial exploitation, subsistence hunting and, most recently, propeller boat injuries.
We are particularly proud of this Bone Clones cast as we were able to retain all parts of the skull, including the inside of the braincase. Auditory bulas and other parts are individually cast and installed. Please check out the other manatee products, such as the manatee forelimb.
