Solenodon, Cuban
Solenodon cubanus
Cuban Solenodon Skull
The Cuban solenodon is found only in Cuba. The family Solenodontidae contains one surviving genus (Solenodon) and two endangered species, both of which we are proud to offer (the other is found in Haiti). It's considered to be representative of a line of mammals that diverged from all other mammals over 75 million years ago. Unique among mammals is their ability to produce toxic saliva. A special groove in the second incisor carries the poison to their victims (similar to gila monsters). The original skull was graciously loaned to us by the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. A portion of each sale goes to the museum to further its research. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
