Polar Bear Skull
Our polar bear skull is a replica of a specimen believed to be the second largest ever found. These bears are often found on ice flows and lead a very nomadic life. Enabling them to swim in the cold waters of the Arctic are their large forepaws, a thick fur undercoat beneath a top layer of guard hairs (helping to keep the bear relatively dry), a thick layer of fat that contributes to both warmth and buoyancy, and a transparent eyelid that functions like goggles in the water (and like sunglasses on land). An extremely sexually dimorphic species, adult females weigh considerably less than the huge males, who can weigh up to 1,600 pounds. Their sense of smell is said to be so keen that they can smell a seal more than 20 miles away. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
