Pelican
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos
American White Pelican Skull
Pelicans are among the largest and heaviest birds in the world. Unlike the smaller brown pelicans who dive from heights to catch their fish, a flock of white pelicans feeds by dipping their pouches in unison into schools of fish while swimming together in formation. Breeding adults develop a horny knob at the end of their long bills. This is believed to act as a target for aggression, sparing their delicate pouches from permanent injury, as the adults fight and compete for territories. 16 ½" L x 2 ½" W x 2 ½" H 42.4L x 6.7W x 6.5H (cm)
