Rhesus Macaque Monkey
Macaca mulatta
Rhesus Macaque Skull
Humans are the only primate species with a broader geographic range than rhesus macaques, which are found throughout Asia from India to southern China. A medium-sized simian, adult males can weigh up to 20 pounds while females may weigh 10-14 pounds. They are highly adaptable and, depending on their habitat, can be primarily terrestrial or arboreal. Most wild troops are associated with human settlements in farms, temples and cities. Their broad diet includes fruits, grains, veggies, insects, leaves, shoots, fish and shellfish. Rhesus macaques are biologically very similar to people as well as hardy and adaptable, all of which has made them indispensable to medical research. Polio and smallpox vaccines are two of the many medical wonders made possible by their contributions. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
