Jack rabbit

Lepus townsendii
White-tailed Jackrabbit Skull
Found throughout western and central Canada and the United States, white-tailed jackrabbits prefer open grasslands, pastures, and open fields. Jackrabbits are hares and hares are rabbits, but not all rabbits are hares. Hares are characterized by their large, well-vascularized ears and long, muscular hind legs, which can propel them at 30 mph or 15 feet into the air. They are also precocial (well-furred with open eyes) at birth, as opposed to rabbits, which are born altricial (naked and hairless). Jackrabbits average weights of 7 to 9 pounds and have large upper incisors for grazing the tough grasses of their prairie homes. They are an important prey item for a variety of mammalian and avian predators. Their large ears and eyes afford them advanced warning, and they are able to zigzag rapidly or even swim to escape, yet they still constitute a large part of the diet of many carnivore species. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
