Ruby Throated Hummingbird

Archilochus colubris
Ruby-throated Hummingbird Skull
The ruby-throated hummingbird is mostly found in eastern and central US, but breeds throughout the central US and Central America. Often found in gardens, it winters in tropical rainforest. Reaching a length of only 3 inches, it is, along with other hummingbirds, the smallest bird in the world. They are well known for their ability to hover and fly backwards like a helicopter. To accomplish this their wings beat about 90 times per second. Interestingly, during courtship this rises to nearly 200. Their long beak aids in sucking nectar from plants, but they will also eat insects and spiders. 1-part skull (jaw glued to cranium).
