Sacred Ibis Skull

Threskiornis aethiopicus
Sacred Ibis Skull
The fossil record of the ibises goes back 60 million years. They began appearing in the human record more than 5,000 years ago. Images of the sacred ibis are found on Egyptian monuments and the god Thoth was represented as having the head of an ibis. The birds themselves were mummified and buried with pharaohs. Today these social coastal birds, which are closely related to the spoonbills, are extinct in Egypt. They occur in Madagascar and sub-Saharan Africa. 1-part skull (jaw glued to cranium).
