Cat-like Hoplophoneus occidentalis Skull
Hoplophoneus occidentalis skull CB-18. Occurence: Orellan-Whitneyan (33-30.5 MYBP), South Dakota. H. occidentalis was one of the largest Nimravids of the Oligocene, approaching that of the extant jaguar. This is a cat-like animal similar to a saber-toothed cat. It is a very rare species. We are grateful to the Babiarz Institute of Paleontological Studies for the opportunity to cast this individual. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
