Normal and arthritic lumbar vertebra. One vertebra is normal and is typical of a young adult who has experienced no unusual back trauma. The edges of the vertebral body are smooth and regular in shape. The other vertebra is osteoarthritic, typical of an older adult or a person with a history of heavy labor (or both).
