Deer jaws- pair comparative pathology

Odocoileus virginianus
Deer Jaws Comparative Pathology Set
This specimen suffered from an affliction commonly called "lumpy jaw". This malady, more appropriately called Actinomycosis, is the result of an infection of the jaw by the bacteria Actinomyces sp., which occurs when foreign bodies become wedged in the gum line. This occurs primarily in cud chewing bovids and cervids. In livestock, this condition is treatable with antibiotics. In wild species, Actinomycosis will cause the deterioration of the mandible, which can then spread throughout the animal's body if it does not starve to death first.
