Polar Bear Tooth

Ursus maritimus
Polar Bear Tooth (Molar)
Molar from the polar bear skull, BC-063. Polar bears are extremely large predators: adult males can grow to almost 10 feet long and weigh up to 1,600 pounds, much more than adult nonpregnant females. Strong swimmers, these bears are often found on ice flows and lead a very nomadic life. Their paws are very large, which helps to distribute their weight across ice or snow. This particular specimen is from what is considered to be the second largest skull ever found. Compared to the molars of the brown bear, the polar bear's molars are smaller and more jagged, while their canines are longer and sharper, ideal for capturing and devouring their preferred diet of seal.
