American black bear front paw. Ranging from Alaska to Mexico, though more prevalent in Northern forested regions, the American black bear reaches 6 feet and over 300 pounds. They are skillful climbers and can run up to 25 miles per hour. The black bear's diet consists mostly of vegetable matter supplemented with insects, small animals, and the infrequent large mammal.
