Gray Catbird

Dumetella carolinensis
Gray Catbird egg replica.
The gray catbird, like its relative, the mockingbird, repeats the notes of other bird species (and the occasional frog). Its name comes from its most common call, which truly conjures up the cry of a cat. The gray catbird nest, made of twigs and mud in a cup form, is usually in a low bush, vine, or small tree about 4 feet off the ground. Its clutch is1-6 eggs, and the clever catbird may use different, well-hidden nests for the 1 to 3 broods it produces each year. Unlike some other songbirds, which are threatened by the parasitic brown-headed cowbird, the gray catbird can tell the difference between its own and the outsider's egg. By ridding its nest of the foreign egg, it increases the chances of survival of its own offspring.

As with all Bone Clones® products, only the finest casting materials are used to cast our North American bird egg series. Our expert artists paint each with meticulous care to match the eggs that were used in the casting process. Each egg is hand painted with permanent dyes and sealed with a resistant coating that makes it ideal for handling, study, teaching, as well as for display. In nature, eggs vary from region to region as well as from bird to bird. The colors and patterns used were determined by the egg used as well as reference material to find a happy medium that would be representative of the species.
