Egg Replicas

Common Loon

Gavia Immer
Common Loon egg replica.
The melancholy wail and tremolo of the common loon are unmistakable. The common loon, or the great northern loon, has inspired many legends. It breeds in North American, Greenland, Iceland and Scotland and migrates for the winter to the southern U.S., southern Europe, and northwestern Africa. Its bones are solid and heavier than those of most other birds. This extra weight allows it to dive 200 feet deep under water to capture fish. This extra weight also demands a long stretch to build the momentum to take off in flight. It is 2 to 3 feet long, with a velvety black head and neck. Its back is covered with black and white striping, spotting and checkering. The nests of the common loon are found on raised ground near water. They consist of a hollow scrape with very little nesting material. Two eggs are usually incubated.
