The osprey is distributed on all continents save Antarctica. Among the raptors, only the peregrine falcon has broader distribution. The osprey is the only hawk with a reversible outer toe and the only hawk to almost completely subsist on live fish. The upperparts of the osprey are brown, the underparts snowy white, and the breast white with brown streaks. Its wings are highly flexible and are often bent in flight. A pair, which usually mates for life, adds to its nest each year, until finally it may be 5 to 6 feet across and twice as deep. The nests are found on tree tops and rocks near water.
