Native to the Galapagos archipelago, located west of continental Ecuador, the Galapagos tortoise is the longest-lived vertebrate today, averaging more than 100 years (the oldest on record was over 150). This long-necked species is the largest extant tortoise, reaching weights of well over 400 pounds and a shell length of over 40 inches. It can survive a year with no food or water. With its survival threatened, the Galapagos tortoise is protected by international law. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
