The Aldabra tortoise is found indigenously only on the Aldabra Atoll, one of the many islands that are part of the Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Giant tortoises were found on many of the Seychelles islands until the late 18th century. The Aldabra tortoise is the last extant species of the giant island tortoises of the Indian Ocean. The domed shells may reach lengths of 3 feet in the female and 4 feet in the male with respective weights of 350 and 550 (making it a close second to the Galapagos tortoise). Those Aldabra tortoises that survive on grasses and other low-lying foods have wider dome-shaped shells than the flatter shells possessed by those tortoises that have the availability of tree and bush vegetation. The latter variation possesses a longer neck, allowing it to reach a range of vegetarian food sources. The lifespan of the tortoise certainly reaches over 100 years, with some reports suggesting 200.
