Squirrel Monkey

Saimiri sciureus
Squirrel Monkey Skull
The common squirrel monkey is distributed in the Amazon basin of South America. The skull of this New World monkey is unique among primates. For example, the braincase (housing the largest brain relative to body size of any primate, including humans) is long, large and projects further back than in other monkeys. These arboreal quadrupeds seldom go down to the forest floor, where they are at greater risk from predators. They are about 12 inches long and their non-prehensile tail is another 16 or so inches. The squirrel monkey, which is intelligent and extremely social, is the most common New World monkey used in biomedical research. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
