Zoology: Living Models (1:1)

Eucobresia Glacialis

Eucobresia glacialis
Life-size model.
Foot length 12 cm.

The Eucobresia Glacialis lives in moderately moist places between rocks and herbaceous stands, on alpine meadows, lawn bands in the rock and scree slopes with plant cover almost exclusively above the tree line. In Switzerland it has been found in the canton of Valais up to 2900 m above sea level. In Austria it occurs between about 1000 and 3100 m above sea level. In Switzerland it was found in the altitudinal belt between 2000 and 3000 m.

The species occurs only in the high alpine regions of the Alps of France, Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany (Allgäu and Berchtesgaden Alps). According to Alba et al. (2004), it is also said to occur in the Catalan Pyrenees.

The Eucobresia Glacialis is a "semi-nudibranch" of the glass snail family (Vitrinidae) and belongs to the land lung snails (Stylommatophora). In glacial glass snails, the shell is already reduced and embedded in the mantle to the extent that they can no longer retract into it.

The species is extremely rare and is on the Red List.
