Zoology: Living Models (1:1)

Great Grey Slug / Leopard Slug

Limax maximus
Life-size model during mating.
During mating, two tiger snails that happen to meet initially crawl after each other. They pursue each other mainly by sense of smell. Of particular interest is apparently also the mucus that the front snail produces at the rear end.

Both snails follow each other to an elevated position, such as a wall projection or a branch on a tree. From there they lower themselves on a self-produced slime rope to a depth of 40 cm, and then mate entwined, hanging in free air. Both snails now stretch out their penis and intertwine these organs with each other.

Snails are hermaphrodites that transfer their sperm in a spermatophore.
