Rock Rabbit (Pica)

Ochotona collaris
Pika Skull
Pikas may sometimes be called "rock rabbits" but they aren't actually rabbits. They are in the same order as rabbits and hares (Lagomorphs) but are classified as a different family. They are smaller than rabbits (about 7 inches long and under half a pound), with shorter legs and shorter, more rounded ears, and are very noisy. O. collaris (collared pika) lives in the mountains in the northwest of North America. Given that they must winter in harsh conditions without hibernating, they stockpile mounds of grass and vegetation to help them survive. Pikas have a long fossil history dating back to the Paleocene epoch. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
