Northern Cardinal
Cardinalis cardinalis
Northern Cardinal Skull
Northern cardinals are quite prolific from Canada through North and Central America, where they adapt well to humans and moderate temperatures. With its bright red plumage and bill and a large crest on its head, the male northern cardinal is instantly recognizable. The female, which is light brownish gray with a bit of red in the wings and tail, lays between one to five eggs. The eggs of these songbirds incubate for 11-13 days, with the chicks fledging after another week or two.
