The barn owl is a medium-sized bird of prey. Mostly nocturnal, it gets its common name from its habit of roosting and nesting in secluded barn lofts. This owl prefers to hunt in open spaces, such as meadows, and is beneficial for rodent control. Many people put up nesting structures to encourage these owls to take up residence, as they are cheaper and more effective than poison to control rodents.
