Giant African Snail / Giant Tiger Land Snail / Gigantocochlea
Achatina achatina
Life-size model.
Body: 38 cm, shell length: 22 cm.
The species is native to West Africa. Between 50 and 100 km along the coasts of Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Togo, Ghana and Nigeria.
These snails are originally from Africa, where they are of great importance to humans as food on the one hand, but as a crop pest on the other. Due to their extreme size, they are extremely productive meat suppliers, but can also cause significant damage to plantations and fields. The consequences are particularly fatal if agate snails are introduced into another country where they are not normally native. Provided the climate there allows it, the snails can reproduce unhindered, and usually lack natural enemies.
